Football Game tonight, Friday 9/27/13

The Band and Color Guard will play at tonight's home football game.  Everyone is in Class B uniform: Band - royal blue shirts, black pants, black socks, marching shoes...Color Guard - white M t-shirts, black pants, white shoes.

Time to be in the Band room is 5:00pm.  The game begins at 7:00pm.  We should be through at approximately 10:00pm.  Come out and support the Sapphire Sound at their first halftime performance!

You are invited to come to Mira Mesa H.S.'s Open House starting at 6pm on Wednesday, September 25th.  Please ask your student for their class schedule, so you will be able to find the rooms they attend classes in each day.  I will have a brief Parent Meeting at the end of Open House from 7:30-8:00pm.  Come to the Band room and hear the latest about the Band and Color Guard!

Padres Game Monday, 9/23/13

The National Anthem will be performed by our very our Band and Color Guard at the Padres game Monday night.  All Band and Color Guard students need to meet at school by 4:15pm.  Band will be in Class B attire: Blue polo shirts, black pant, black socks, and marching shoes. Color Guard needs to be in their white M shirts, black pants, and white shoes. All girls (band or guard) will have the hair pulled back in a ponytail.

We will travel by bus to the game and back to the high school in the evening.  The approximate time for return is 9:15pm. Please allow time for the students to retrieve their things from the Band room, so 9:30 pick up should be enough time (unless of unforeseen issues arise with our transportation).

Thank you to everyone for supporting the Sapphire Sound! If you are attending the game, please remember to give yourself enough time to travel and park.  We don't want you to miss our performance. The time we have been given to play the National Anthem is around 6:45pm.

Padres Game 9/23, Tickets, & Permission Slips

Any Band or Color Guard student who does not plan on riding home on the bus from the Padres game this Monday must bring in a note from a parent or have an email sent to Mrs. Christensen by Thursday (9/19).

Padres tickets will be issued to students at the end of night rehearsal Thursday (9/19).  Mrs. C will hold all performers tickets until they are through performing on Monday to be able to get into Petco Park.

Also, ALL students must have their permission slips turned in by Friday (9/20).

Please turn in your order for tickets along with the money for the Padres game by Wednesday, September 11th.  On September 23rd, the Band and Color Guard will be performing the National Anthem at the Padres vs. Diamondbacks baseball game.  All ordered tickets will be issued to the students on September 18th.  Come out and support the Sapphire Sound (and Padres)! :-)

Reminder - Thursday Night Rehearsal, 9/5

This is a reminder that ALL members of the Marching Band and Color Guard have rehearsal from 5-9pm on each Thursday starting with 9/5/13.  Band members are to wear black shirts (may have writing) and Color Guard members wear white shirts.

Parents/Guardians are welcome to attend any of the rehearsals.

First Day of School, Tues. 9/3

All Band and Color Guard students should arrive to school on Tuesday at 7:00am.  Mrs. C will have an alpha list on the door telling students what room they pick up their schedules from.  The bell will ring at 7:25am to head to those rooms.  After they get their schedules, students will then follow their Periods 1-6 assigned courses.

Schedules the first day may still have errors and we will try to get them fixed as quickly as possible. Online information for students and parents, such as Grades and Attendance, will be a "work-in-progress", as the school district has gone to a new system.  Please be patient as every teacher and office staff is learning the new system. :-)

Bonfire Tonight, 8/23

The annual Bonfire for the Band and Color Guard is tonight at La Shores from 5:30-9:00pm.  Carpools are to meet in the front parking lot at MMHS at 4:45pm.  Parents who are driving, please pick up students at 9:00pm and return to the high school by 9:30pm.

The Bonfire WILL be chaperoned.  All parents are welcome to attend.

Band Camp Week, Aug. 19-23

It's Band Camp week at MMHS for the Sapphire Sound!  Monday-Thursday from 2-9pm.  Dinner will be served each of these days.  Friday from 9am-3pm along with the annual bonfire at 5:30pm.  On Monday, Ms. Chapman will be at school starting at 1pm to sell our "M wear" t-shirts and hoodies.  Please remember to bring pencils, water, and wear athletic shorts and shoes.

It's also considered "Spirit Week", so here's the schedule:
* Monday - School Spirit Day! (Wear blue and gold)
* Tuesday - Super Hero Day! (Capes, masks, costumes)
* Wednesday - Gender Bender! (Always interesting)
* Thursday - Angels vs. Demons (Angel or Demon...your choice)

Music Camp begins Wednesday, 8/14

Music Camp begins Wednesday, August 14 and goes through Friday, August 16 each day from 6-9pm.  We will also size for uniforms during these three days starting at 3pm. Wednesday is Seniors and Juniors, Thursday is Juniors and Sophomores, and Friday is Sophomores and the start of Freshman. Please wear athletic shorts and a t-shirt each day in order for you to be sized.

4th of July Parade

Here's the info for the 4th of July Parade:
1.  All Sousaphones, Drumline, Pit, and Color Guard members will meet in the Band room by 10:00am to retrieve equipment and instruments.
2.  All other Band members will meet at the Sherwin-Williams off of Greenford and Mira Mesa Blvd by 10:45am.  Please drop off your student at the corner of Hillary and Greenford (Mira Mesa Blvd will be closed) and have only their instrument, not their case with them.
3.  The Parade begins at 11:30am and we are #12 in the line-up.  We should be through the parade by 12:45pm at the latest if everything runs on time.  The end of the parade is at the Mira Mesa Library.  Everyone will be dismissed at the library.  Please discuss what location you would like to pick up your son or daughter.

4th of July Camp and All-family BBQ, Monday 7/1

The July 4th Camp is here and ALL Band and Color Guard students are invited to attend the three days of practice before the parade on Thursday.  Wear comfortable clothes and athletic shoes for marching. Here's the schedule:

  • Monday (7/1) - Rehearsal for Band and Color Guard students at MMHS from 4:00-6:30pm.  At 6:30pm outside of the Band room, ALL families and students will enjoy a BBQ.  Just bring yourselves and enjoy meeting one another!
  • Tuesday (7/2) - Rehearsal from 4:00-6:30pm.
  • Wednesday (7/3) - Rehearsal from 4:00-6:30pm.
  • Thursday - 4th of July Parade on Mira Mesa Blvd.
Details will be given to students about the parade route and times at Monday's rehearsal.  Hope to see you all at camp and at the BBQ at 6:30pm Monday!

4th of July Parade and Rehearsals

I hope you are enjoying the first full week off of school.  It is time to think about the 4th of July.  The rehearsal schedule will be the following:
  • Monday, July 1st - 4:00-6:30pm.  Please wear comfortable clothes and athletic shoes, bring a pencil, a bottle of water, and your instrument.  If you need an instrument, then we will issue you one.
  • Monday, July 1st - 6:30-7:30pm.  Parent and Student BBQ.  All families of the Band and Color Guard are welcome to attend this casual BBQ dinner .  There will also be a short parent and student informational meeting.
  • Tuesday, July 2nd - 4:00-6:30pm.  Rehearsal in Band room and Parking Lot.
  • Wednesday, July 3rd - 4:00-6:30pm.  Rehearsal in Band room and Parking Lot.  Loaner marching shoes will be issued at the end of rehearsal.
  • Thursday, July 4th - 4TH OF JULY PARADE.  All Band and Color Guard students will meet behind the Sherwin-Williams Paint store off of Greenford and Mira Mesa Blvd at 10:45am. The parade route begins at the corner of Mira Mesa Blvd and Greenford.  It proceeds westbound on Mira Mesa Blvd, then it makes a right turn onto Camino Ruiz, and ends at the corner of Camino Ruiz and Reagan Rd.  All students will be released after instruments have been put away at school.  If students have their own instruments, then parents may meet up with them at the MM Library.  Tentative time for lease will be 12:45-1:00pm.

Banquet, 8th grade Open House, and Show Reveal

The Band and Color Guard Banquet is this Sunday, June 2 at the MCAS Miramar Officer's Club from 12:00-4:00pm.  Please arrive by 12noon and wear dressy casual attire.

The 2013 Marching Field Show for the Sapphire Sound will be revealed on Wednesday, June 5 at 3:00pm. All current and incoming members are invited to join us. This will also be a chance for the 8th graders to meet everyone in our first Band Open House from 3:00-4:00pm. See you there!

Area Concert Tuesday, May 21st at 6:30pm

The Mira Mesa cluster of schools will perform in the Gym on Tuesday evening at 6:30pm.  The concert is free and concessions will be available for purchase.  Come support the Elementary, Middle and High Schools of the Mira Mesa community!

Band call time is 5:00pm in formal concert attire.

AP Music Theory Exam is Monday, May 13th.  Students need to meet Mrs. C in room 403 at 6:50am. Do not bring any electronic devices with you on Monday.  You will need to bring: your lunch and snacks, two pencils with erasers, and two blue or black ink pens.  Study hard this weekend!  Be smart with your answers.  "What would Mrs. C do?" :-)

Disneyland Parent & Student Meeting Tonight at 6:30pm

Our Disneyland Parent and Student meeting is tonight at 6:30pm in the MMHS Theatre.  Mr. Kriley and I will ask that parents and students sit together to fill out the paperwork for the meeting.  The meeting will be brief, but it is necessary to have everyone present who will be attending the May 24-26 trip.

Spring Concert tickets will also be available tonight at the end of the meeting for our May 17th and 18th concerts.

Congratulations Color Guard!

Color Guard Championships are now complete and we would like to congratulate both the JV and Varsity teams on their strong performances.  Both groups have had a terrific season and this weekend they showed all of their hard work from this semester.  JV placed 3rd in their division and Varsity placed 4th.  Congratulations on representing MMHS in an outstanding way!

Week of March 25-29, 2013

First, a BIG "Thank You!" to everyone who helped to make this past weekend a successful one.  From the conclusion of the musical, to the Color Guard who performed and competed Saturday and Sunday, it was a busy weekend.  Congratulations to the JV team for their 4th place finish at Del Norte HS.  Also, congratulations to the Varsity team for placing 2nd at USD in the finals!  Well done!

  • Saturday - WGI Regional for Color Guard at the University of San Diego - all day
  • Saturday - "Les Mis" musical performances at 2:00pm and closing night at 7:00pm. Call times are one hour before the performances.
  • Sunday - WGI Regional for Color Guard at the University of San Diego - 7:30am-6:00pm
Thank you to all who will be volunteering at USD, driving judges, watching groups warm-up and perform this weekend!  We are hosting some of the best teams in the state and from out of state.  All of your support is greatly appreciated.

"Les Miserables" Opening Weekend

CONGRATULATIONS x2!!

A big CONGRATULATIONS to all 37 of the Mira Mesa HS Band and Orchestra students who performed in the San Diego Unified School District's Honor Concert last night at Copley Symphony Hall.  It was a great concert!  Well done.

Also, our second CONGRATULATIONS goes to Mr. Mulvaney for being selected as this year's High School Instrumental Music Teacher for the school district.  This honor is well deserved, so please give him your congratulations when you see him next.

All-Southern Honor Band Concert Today


The SCSBOA All-Southern Honor Band concert is today at 1:00pm at the University of Redlands.  Come up to Riverside and support Jake Boring in the concert.  Congratulations, Jake!

Nice start, Color Guard!

The JV and Varsity Color Guards teams began their indoor season yesterday at Olympian HS in Chula Vista.  Both groups got off to a great start by placing second each!  This should be a terrific season for the Mira Mesa HS Color Guard!

Second Semester - Monday, 1/28/13

The second semester begins on Monday at 7:30am.  All students will go to period 1 and receive a schedule of classes.  If schedules have changed, then they will be released to attend their new period 1 and will follow the new courses for the rest of the day.

It is great to get the concert season officially started!  All of the students did a great job with their final performance exams.  I look forward to working with the ensembles this spring.  Please attend our monthly meeting this Thursday, January 31st at 7:00pm in the Band room for information about this semester.

Tuesday - Color Guard rehearsal after school
Wednesday - FINALS - Period 1 & 2 - Minimum Day
Thursday - FINALS - Period 3 & 4 - Minimum Day
Thursday - NO Parent Meeting (next week 1/31)
Friday - FINALS - Period 5 & 6 - Minimum Day
Friday - Pep Band for Basketball - Call time 5pm.  Class B shirts.

This Friday is the last day of the semester.  Please encourage your student to eat and get plenty of rest.

Tuesday - Minimum Day (early release for students at 12:27pm for ALL minimum day schedules now through the remainder of the school year) - lunch will be at 10:28am. 
Wednesday - Minimum Day - Musical Pit Rehearsal, 3:30-5:00pm
Thursday - Band performance final concludes
Friday - "Normal" class schedule

Performance Finals

All Band students will perform a required list of scales and a prepared piece on a set schedule starting from Wednesday, January 9 through Thursday, January 17.  This is part of their final grade for the semester and is an important part of being selected into one of the large ensembles for second semester.

Please encourage your student to practice and be ready for their "audition" date and time.  The list of dates and times are located in the Band room.
